You’re probably wondering, “What is Aquaponics?” Aquaponics is simply a system for farming fish and plants together in a mutually beneficial cycle; it is the marriage of hydroponics and aquaculture. In this system, fish produce wastes that turn into nitrates and ammonia. This waste, harmful for the fish in large amounts, is great plant fertilizer. As the plants use these nutrients, they simultaneously purify the water, which is essential for the fish. This relationship is so perfectly balanced that it requires the smallest amount of effort from the harvester. While many people know the components of Aquaponics its application into an urban setting, its efficient approach is still somewhat misunderstood. Aquaponics is about clean, fresh food and is currently the most efficient agricultural system. Issues and problems wit traditional soil gardening are well-known, most notably the conditions present in the preparation and harvesting process. It is hard to encompass how our current system is clean, when in fact the food on your plates has been touched by dozens of hands using a variety of chemicals. Many varieties of the food you see today at the grocery store have traveled hundreds of miles before it is served at your dinner table. Aquaponics redefines the concept of organic and home-grown.
